The site-specific installation Wave by Jinnie Seo transforms the free-form atrium of the Asan Institute for Policy Studies into the inner world of the ocean.
Wave is Seo's most ambitious vinyl installation to date. Previous works such as Shadow of Line (2006) and Storm (2008) dealt with the two-dimensional plane; Wave for AAIPS is the first time to completely wrap a three-dimensional space of this scale and configuration. The 14 meters high curvilinear glass and steel atrium is entirely covered with 572.5m² of vinyl film sheets in 15 different colors. Hand-drawn motifs, based on the shell of the turtle and the ocean currents, were laser-cut into nearly 800 pieces of vinyl. Each piece was then applied onto the atrium walls. These giant curvilinear and swirling shapes of vinyl transform a structure designed to be transparent into a bold new sculpture.
Visitors entering the Asan Institute feel the sensation of being submerged in the bottom of the ocean. Taking the glass elevator to the upper floors and walking along the footbridges bisecting the atrium, visitors feel as if they are slowly rising up towards the surface of the water. The unique architectural elements of the building become a seamless part of the artwork, providing new ways of seeing. Knowingly or unknowingly, people move in and out, around and through a work of art.
Wave is truly a collaboration between experts in multiple fields. Seo's installation plans-laid out to the last millimeter-are developed over the course of months based on discussions and analysis with a team of graphic designers, fabricators, and installers. Using architectural study models, hundreds of hours of on-site research is dedicated to understanding the space, its function, and people's movements. The result is a new skin of images that seem original to the building.
For this work, the Asan Institute has made it possible for Seo to bring art outside of its traditional boundaries and into the public realm. Wave leaves the 'gallery space' to enter the public spaces and private offices of a think tank. The work engages a wide audience-from those who are well versed in art to those whose expertise lies in such diverse fields as nuclear energy, foreign policy, and human rights. With Wave, Seo redefines what public art is in relation to the changing nature of contemporary art.
Seo lives and works in Seoul, Korea. Her works have been presented at the Mongin Art Center (Seoul), National Museum of Singapore, The Hermes Gallery (Singapore), Seoul Museum of Art, and Leeum Samsung Museum (Seoul). She has received numerous grants and fellowships including those at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in California and The MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire.

지니서의 <Wave>는 아산정책연구원의 유려한 곡선으로 이루어진 아트리움을 바닷속 세계로 변모시킨 '장소 특정적 (site-specific)' 설치 작업을 선보인다.
<Wave>는 지금까지 지니서의 비닐 설치작품 중 가장 웅장한 작품이다. <Shadow of Line>(2006), <Storm>(2008) 등 이전 작품들은 2차원을 주로 다룬 반면, <Wave>는 거대한 스케일의 3차원적 공간인 아산정책연구원 건물을 완전히 뒤덮는 지니서의 첫 번째 시도이다. 높이가 14미터에 달하는 아트리움의 곡선을 이루는 유리와 철로 된 골조는 15가지의 다른 색채의 572.5m²의 시트지로 포장되었다. 넘실거리는 파도와 바다거북의 등껍질에서 영감을 얻은 작품은 800개에 달하는 비닐 조각으로 나뉘어, 유리벽에 부착되었다. 거대한 유선형의 소용돌이치는 형상을 한 시트지는 투명한 유리 건물을 하나의 새로운 조각 작품으로 변모시킨다.
<Wave>는 1mm까지 치밀하게 재단된 지니서의 설치 플랜을 바탕으로 그래픽 디자이너, 제작자, 비닐 설치자 등 여러 분야의 전문가들이 하나의 팀을 이루어 논의하고 분석한 끝에 이루어낸 성과이다. 개별 공간의 기능과 사람들의 동선의 파악을 위해 오랜 시간의 현장 조사 끝에 도출된 이 드로잉은 단순한 평면적 예술에 그치지 않는다. 건물 본연의 모습과 같이 자연스러우면서도, 공간에 새로운 표정을 부여하는 지니서의 작품은 이 모든 여정의 산물이다.
아산정책연구원은 기존의 예술의 영역에서 벗어나 공공 영역으로 확장되는 이 작업이 원활히 진행될 수 있도록 작가에 대한 지원을 아끼지 않았다. <Wave>는 예술에 정통한 관객들뿐 아니라 연구원의 직원 및 방문객 등 다양한 분야의 사람들을 대상으로 한다. 연구원에 들어선 방문객들은 깊은 바닷속으로 발을 내디딘 것 같은 경험을 하게 된다. 유리로 된 엘리베이터를 타고 높은 층으로 올라가거나 아트리움을 사선으로 가로지르는 계단을 따라 걸으면 천천히 수면을 향해 올라가는 기분이 들게 한다. 독특한 건축 요소들은 작품의 보이지 않는 일부가 되어 새로운 느낌으로 거듭난다. 본인도 모르는 사이에 사람들은 작품의 안과 밖을 넘나들며 작품을 감상하게 된다. <Wave>는 비단 갤러리뿐 아니라 오피스 및 공공 장소까지 스며들어 다양한 관람객들과 소통하며 공공미술의 동시대적 의미를 재정의 하게 될 것 이다.
지니서 작가는 서울에 거주하며 작업하고 있다. 몽인아트센터(서울), 싱가폴 국립미술관(싱가폴), 리움 삼성미술관(서울), 서울시립미술관(서울), 에르메스 갤러리(싱가폴) 등에서 작품을 선보인 바 있으며, 미국 캘리포니아의 Djerassi 및 뉴 햄프셔 맥도웰 창작 레지던트 프로그램에 참가하였다.
